Effective counseling begins with an effective relationship.

The job of an effective counselor is to guide the client to an ever increasing awareness and acceptance of the emotional areas that they deny, or cannot face on their own. Once the counselor is able to point out how someone gets in their own way, significant and lasting change can take place.
It is my job to provide a safety net for my client’s self revelation. I pay close attention to my client’s process of thinking, and not just to the content of their thoughts. Put simply, it’s not what one thinks but how one thinks about it that is the key to emotional health. I’ve been refining my skills over the last three decades. Over time I have struggled to overcome in some shape or form, every issue that has troubled my patients including anger, self-loathing, and lack of emotional generosity. I am fully committed to helping my clients enjoy life without the self constraints that interfere with the pursuit of happiness.
To Gene
I wear you like a sweater around my shoulders
You whisper helpful hints on how to
Navigate my day.
Marilynn — that is paranoia
Marilynn — be on your own side
Marilynn — your children love you
I wear you like slippers upon my feet
To gently guide my way through the world
As I travel from listlessness
To blissfulness.
I wear you as gloves upon my hands
Keeping me from self-harm.
You are my 911 call
My safety net
You make it safe for me
To be with me.
How lucky for me.
I offer counseling services in two offices: Oakland and Walnut Creek, California.
